Without a budget, the contractor has no idea what level of quality you want for your project and is left guessing.

I’ll share a quick story.
My mother (who doesn’t live close to me, or I would have done the project myself) wanted to remodel her bathroom and called me looking for advice. She had received three bids and asked for my opinion.
I told her to go with one of the higher bids because I understood the scope of work involved.
Well… she didn’t listen. She tried to save some money and decided to go with the cheapest option.
That decision backfired in a big way.
About halfway through the project, the “cheap” contractor realized he had underbid the job. From that point on, he kept asking for more money week after week just to keep the project moving. Not to mention it took 3 months longer then he originally estimated.
In the end, she paid almost the exact same amount as the contractor I originally recommended.
The difference?
She had to deal with the stress, frustration, and uncertainty the entire time.
If she had gone with the right contractor from the start, she would have avoided all of that.
A well-planned project done right once is always cheaper than fixing a bad one twice.
